Bartow’s Namesake

Sunday, August 8th, 2010

A little research found the following information about General Francis Bartow.

Colonel (posthumously brevetted to General) Francis Stebbins Bartow (September 6, 1816 – July 21, 1861) was an attorney, Confederate States of America political leader, and military officer during the early months of the American Civil War. He was an inaugural representative to the Confederate Provisional Congress, where he led efforts to prepare for the coming war.

Bartow was killed at the First Battle of Bull Run, becoming the first brigade commander in the Confederate States Army to die in combat. He was the first brigade commander to be killed in action during the Civil War. (The first general officer to be killed in the war was Confederate Brig. Gen. Robert S. Garnett at Corrick’s Ford, July 13, 1861.)
