Welcome to Central Florida’s most charming bed & breakfast, The Stanford Inn.
Situated in the historic downtown district of Bartow, Florida, The Stanford Inn is a lovely Victorian retreat for travelers from around the world.

Originally built in 1906 by Mr. T. L. Wilson, a prominent attorney, The Stanford Inn offers six delightfully decorated and comfortable guest rooms; each with its own private bathroom, cable television and wireless internet access. Guests will enjoy the freshly-made daily gourmet breakfast served in the gracious turn-of-the-century atmosphere of the Stanford Inn. Outdoors guests can discover the inn’s tropical gardens as well as the outdoor pool. One-of-a-kind antiques, artwork and furnishings complete the warm Southern hospitality.

This picturesque bed and breakfast is situated on a quiet corner lot in downtown Bartow, known as “The City of Oaks and Azaleas”. The home itself offers an expansive covered porch at the entryway with rocking chairs for relaxing and unwinding. Bartow, Florida, is conveniently located a short drive from a variety of popular Central Florida destinations including Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales, the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando and Busch Gardens, Tampa Bay, and Legoland in Winter Haven.

Cinephiles may recognize The Stanford Inn from its prominent feature as the Sultenfuss’ residence in the 1991 film “My Girl,” starring Dan Aykroyd, Jamie Lee Curtis, Anna Chlumsky and Macaulay Culkin.

We look forward to welcoming you to The Stanford Inn, “A Beautiful Place for Beautiful Memories.

Bartow’s Namesake

Sunday, August 8th, 2010

A little research found the following information about General Francis Bartow.

Colonel (posthumously brevetted to General) Francis Stebbins Bartow (September 6, 1816 – July 21, 1861) was an attorney, Confederate States of America political leader, and military officer during the early months of the American Civil War. He was an inaugural representative to the Confederate Provisional Congress, where he led efforts to prepare for the coming war.

Bartow was killed at the First Battle of Bull Run, becoming the first brigade commander in the Confederate States Army to die in combat. He was the first brigade commander to be killed in action during the Civil War. (The first general officer to be killed in the war was Confederate Brig. Gen. Robert S. Garnett at Corrick’s Ford, July 13, 1861.)
